Description: Legal Aid of North Carolina is partnering with the North Carolina Bar Association Foundation Endowment to host a no-cost CLE program to support Disaster Legal Services volunteer attorneys in their work on behalf of hurricane victims. Please join us.

This 3.5 hour Disaster Legal Services CLE program will cover the following topics:

  • FEMA regulations, claims, and advising clients on proper registration

  • Legal aspects of disaster-related property and casualty insurance claims

  • Rights of homeowners in a disaster; rent-to-own issues

  • Rights of tenants in a disaster: obligations to pay rent, deposits, utilities

  • Public benefits law: legal aspects of unemployment compensation; government benefits in a disaster; school law

  • Advising clients on scams, abuse, wills, and replacing legal documents

  • Disaster legal assistance for seniors and special needs persons; immigration issues.

This CLE program is supported with a generous grant from the NCBA Foundation Endowment, which will cover the cost of MCLE fees and lunch for participating attorneys. The Disaster Legal Services pro bono program is coordinated by the NC Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division, Legal Aid of North Carolina, the American Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

If you would like to volunteer with Disaster Legal Services and have not yet signed up, please email Cabell Clay and Rachel Blunk.

All participants in this CLE program will be expected to assist at least one Hurricane Matthew client through the Disaster Legal Services pro bono program.
