Legal Aid of North Carolina Board of Directors
Resolution regarding
Deborah Greenblatt
June 17, 2005
WHEREAS, Deborah Greenblatt served as Executive Director of Carolina
Legal Assistance, a sister organization, for twenty-three years and
unflinchingly served, with passion and commitment, the legal needs of
children and people with disabilities.
WHEREAS, Deborah Greenblatt championed the rights of the mentally
disabled and helped led the advocacy in many noteworthy and innovative
cases, including Willie M. (W.D. NC 1979), Hopkins v. Cabarrus Cty. Schools
(90 EDC 0773 (OAH), Bradham v. Girl Scout Council Coastal Carolina 89 CVS
523 (Craven Cty Sup Ct), In re Truesdell 310 NC 745 (1984), and County et al
v. State of NC and State Brd of Ed. (Leandro).
WHEREAS, Deborah Greenblatt has represented thousands of clients in
special education matters, fair housing cases, class actions against state
hospitals, and employment discrimination cases, to ensure their rights under
law and has extended her legal advocacy to successful public policy and
legislative campaigns to affirm the dignity of persons with disabilities.
WHEREAS, Deborah Greenblatt was a stalwart legal advocate and a
"warrior for justice," but remained effective in fostering a spirit of
cooperation and dedication among diverse interest groups in pursuit of
dignity for the disabled.
WHEREAS, Deborah Greenblatt, a loving wife and mother, fought a
tenacious battle with cancer for eleven years and inspired us all with her
courage and indomitable spirit.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we honor Deborah Greenblatt for the
indelible mark that she has left upon all of us and we extend our deepest
sympathies to her family and friends at her untimely passing on June 13,
2005.
BE IT RESOLVED FURTHER, that Legal Aid of North Carolina establish a permanent
award or fellowship to preserve the memory of Deborah Greenblatt and her
remarkable career, in which she spoke truth to power, as an inspiration to
future legal services attorneys and, indeed, to all members of the bar who
value justice and will work to change things for the better.
The Undersigned Officers of the Corporation and members of the Executive
Committee of the Board of Directors of Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc.,
certify that the above action and resolution was duly approved and adopted
by the Board on the date set forth above.
