History

The LANC-Wilmington Office has represented southeastern North Carolina’s poor in civil legal cases since 1976. Our work helps our clients deal with some of life's most basic needs -- a safe home, enough food to eat, a decent education, protection against fraud, and personal safety.

In 1976, the Law & Justice Committee of the New Hanover County Human Relations Committee in conjunction with the United Way and in response to the critical need for legal assistance for the indigent in New Hanover County, established "New Hanover County Legal Aid Association" to serve the legal needs of approximately 25,000 people in New Hanover County who were unable to afford private legal counsel. The original staff was two attorneys, one paralegal, and a secretary. After a year, we expanded to serve the people of Pender County.

In 1980, drawing on the experiences in Pender County, and the response to the need for providing services to rural poverty level populations, the Legal Aid Association via the Legal Services Corporation became "Legal Services of the Lower Cape Fear, Inc." The office then expanded to include seven (7) counties with a potential 99,000 poor people over 5200 square miles (we served clients in Sampson County from 1980-1983), including: Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow and Pender Counties.

In 2002, the LANC-Wilmington office became one of the 24 field offices of Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) and continues to serve low-income people in southeastern counties of North Carolina.  LANC–Wilmington Office’s seasoned advocates are a recognized part of the justice system here on the east coast.
