The Winston-Salem Office
of Legal
Aid of North Carolina is looking for volunteers for the following
opportunities:
-
Justice for All Volunteers
...Justice for All Volunteers are needed to help with several ongoing
projects and to educate the community about the services we provide.
A Justice for All Volunteer may choose to do such things as: make
community education presentations to groups and organizations; organize
and set up for community education presentations; make calls for
events; file and copy documents; do much needed mailings; retrieve
information from the courthouse; travel to other counties or observe
the courtroom process. Justice for All Volunteers may be students,
former clients, retirees, private legal practitioners, disabled
persons or any persons interested in helping us help others. All
Justice for All Volunteers will receive a minimum of an one-hour
orientation.
-
Pro Bono Attorneys (volunteer attorneys)
...Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) actively recruits, trains, mentors, and
co-counsels with
volunteer (pro bono) attorneys to help handle the many complex
and changing legal issues unique to the practice of civil poverty
law. These partnerships with the Legal Aid of North Carolina staff help ensure
access to justice for low-income families and further leverage the
dollars that are invested in Legal Aid of North Carolina. Typically, pro bono
attorneys are needed either for their special expertise and/or to
help us with our large case load. To volunteer for pro bono service
with Winston-Salem Office, just telephone (336-725-9162) our local
Pro Bono (PAI) Coordinator, and/or complete a
"Pro Bono Service
Sign-Up Form" and fax it (336-723-9140) to our office.
-
Court Observation Volunteers (college & graduate students)
...Court Observation Volunteers will attend Small Claims Court at
the Forsyth County Hall of Justice and fill out a court observation
form. The feed back from this form will allow us to adjust our educational
clinics to the need of our participants. All volunteers will receive
a minimum of one-hour orientation/training prior to participating
in the program. Summary ejectment hearings are held Monday-Friday
between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. After orientation/training, we
will need a commitment from each individual volunteer for this project
of at least 1 hour per month for 3 months.
-
Volunteer Interns (students)
...Must be a high school senior or currently enrolled college student.
Volunteer interns are needed to help coordinate several ongoing
projects, to educate the community about the services we provide
and to assist our advocates with their cases. All volunteer interns
will receive extensive orientation prior to being given any assignments.
Volunteers are needed!
LANC of Winston-Salem (W/S)
is the local office in the Winston-Salem area that serves the counties
of: Davie, Forsyth, Iredell, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin. LANC resources
are very limited. Our local
Winston-Salem office (which has only six attorneys covering six
counties) was only able to serve just over 850 clients in 2005. More
needs to be done. To fill the gap, part of our mission is to help empower
people by educating them to represent themselves at forums that are
conducive to self-help. W/S offers at least two clinics to show participants
how to represent themselves at a summary ejectment hearing in Small
Claims Court or a Medicaid hearing at the Department of Social Services.
We also plan to provide access to tapes that will educate people on
several legal issues to include: unemployment insurance, health care
directives, wills, power of attorneys (POA), bankruptcy, domestic violence
and child custody.
Legal Aid
of North Carolina, Inc. (LANC) is a statewide, nonprofit law firm
with over 20 local offices across the state. LANC provides high quality,
civil legal services to low-income people in all 100 counties of North
Carolina, so that they will have equal access to justice and to economic
opportunity. LANC addresses the basic needs of the poor and low-income
families, including legal advice regarding healthcare benefits, consumer
law, protection from domestic violence and rights to decent, safe, and
affordable housing. With less than 100 LANC attorneys statewide, serving
1.5 million eligible clients, we have only one attorney for every 15,000
poor people in North Carolina.
