Allison elected chair of the board of directors of Legal Aid of North Carolina

(Raleigh, NC) – Leo L. Allison was elected chair of the
board of directors
of Legal Aid of North Carolina during the 2004 LANC Annual Meeting in Asheville
in mid-June.
Allison succeeds James B. Maxwell of Durham and is the first
non-attorney to serve as chair of Legal Aid of North Carolina since its inception following
the consolidation of LSC-funded legal services programs in North Carolina in
July 2002.
Allison is Chair of Orange Congregations in Missions, Hillsborough, NC, and
is a former founder and chairman of United Voices of Efland, Efland, NC. He
is a 1954 graduate of North Carolina College and earned his MS in engineering
from Syracuse University
“Across the state, community leaders and the legal community have come
together to ensure equal access to justice for all citizens of our state,”
declared Allison following his election on June 18.
"The goal of our Board for the coming year will be to strengthen our
ties to the legal community in ways that can strengthen our abilities to allow
our attorneys and their staffs to effectively provide legal services to
the low income citizens of North Carolina.”
Other officers elected included: Reid C. "Cal" Adams (of Womble Carlyle
Sandridge & Rice, PLLC,
Winston-Salem,
NC) as Vice Chair; and Leto Copeley (Patterson
Harkavy & Lawrence, LLP, Raleigh,
NC) as Treasurer; and Richard E. Fay (of Hamilton Gaskins Fay & Moon,
PLLC, Charlotte) as Secretary.
In addition, other directors elected to the Legal Aid of North Carolina executive
committee were: Glenn A. Barfield (of Barnes Braswell & Haithcock,
PA,
Goldsboro) and James B. Maxwell (of Maxwell Freeman & Bowman,
PA,
Durham).
The Legal Aid of North Carolina board of directors includes geographically elected client
representatives and appointed attorneys serving as representatives of legal
associations across North Carolina, including: NC Bar Association, NC State Bar,
NC Academy of Trial Lawyers, NCBA Hispanic & Latino Lawyers Committee, NC
Association of Defense Attorneys, NC Association of Black Lawyers, NC Gay and
Lesbian Attorneys and NC Association of Women Attorneys.
Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide, nonprofit law firm that provides free
legal services in civil matters to low-income people in order to ensure equal
access to justice and to remove legal barriers to economic opportunity.
