Wilmington Office Of Legal Aid Expands Legal Representation to Victims of
Domestic Violence
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-OCTOBER 15, 2004
(Wilmington, NC) - Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc. (LANC), a statewide
nonprofit law firm, announced today that it has expanded its Domestic Violence
Unit.
The Wilmington Office of LANC has a Domestic Violence Unit composed of
lawyers and paralegals who specialize in providing legal assistance to domestic
violence victims in civil cases. Victims of domestic violence needing
protective orders or other civil legal assistance may qualify for Legal Aid
irrespective of their level of income. Persons who have been physically abused
or threatened with physical abuse by a domestic or dating partner may be
eligible for assistance. Legal Aid can provide legal services to citizens of the
United States, documented aliens, and undocumented residents who are abused by
their spouses. The Domestic Violence Unit collaborates with domestic
violence shelters and other agencies that assist victims of domestic violence.
In order to continue providing high quality representation to clients and
expand LANC’s outreach in the increasing Hispanic population, an additional
attorney has been added to the Unit. Sebastian Kielmanovich, originally
from Argentina, is bilingual in Spanish and English and will concentrate in
representing victims of domestic violence in rural counties within the region.
Jim Morgan, staff attorney with the Unit since 1997, will continue to specialize
in representing victims of domestic violence within the seven counties.
LANC’s mission is to provide free legal services in civil matters to
low-income people in order to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal
barriers to economic opportunity. The Wilmington Office of LANC serves a
seven-county region that includes New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick, Columbus,
Bladen, Onslow and Duplin Counties.
Domestic violence victims can call Legal Aid Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to
5 PM and request that an application be taken over the telephone at (910)
