Nelson Mullins Fellow
at Legal Aid of North Carolina

(Durham, NC) – Erwin Byrd has been named as the first recipient of the
Nelson Mullins/Legal Aid of North Carolina Fellowship.
Byrd began her two-year fellowship on October 3 as a staff attorney in the
Durham office of Advocates for Children’s Services (ACS), a statewide
project of Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC).
“We are excited about having Ms. Byrd on staff and as the first recipient of
the Nelson Mullins Fellowship,” said Lewis Pitts, senior managing attorney for
Advocates for Children’s Services. “As an attorney for ACS, Ms. Byrd will
be expected to engage in legal representation of children, collaborate with
children services agencies and provide outreach to parents and community
groups.”
Byrd is a 2005 graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Law.
Byrd has worked as a legal assistant with Schollander Law Offices,
Winston-Salem, NC, and served as a summer intern with Center for Death Penalty
Litigation, Durham, NC and as a summer intern with the Alaska Public Defender
Agency, Anchorage, AK.
Prior to law school, Byrd earned her Bachelor of Arts in English, magna cum
laude, with honors (Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of the South, Sewanee,
TN, where she was the captain of varsity field hockey team and president of the
Order of Gownsmen academic honor society.

Advocates for
Children’s Services (ACS) is a statewide project of LANC that provides free
legal representation to at-risk children and children involved in the juvenile
justice system because they have been denied Medicaid, Special Education, speedy
permanent placement and/or the opportunity for a sound basic education. ACS
currently has offices in Durham and Winston-Salem, NC.
Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC)
is a statewide, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil
matters to eligible, low-income people in all 100 counties in North Carolina
through 24, geographically located offices in North Carolina. LANC’s clients
typically have an annual income of 125% or less of the federally established
poverty levels.
