Glenn Barfield elected chair of the board of directors of Legal
Aid of NC
July 2, 2007 MEDIA RELEASE
(Raleigh, NC) –
Glenn A.
Barfield was elected chair of the board of directors of
Legal Aid of North Carolina
(LANC) during the 2007 LANC Annual Meeting in Asheville, N.C.
Barfield is an attorney and partner in the law firm of
Haithcock, Barfield,
Hulse and Kinsey, PLLC, in Goldsboro, NC, and is a 1986 graduate
of the University of North Carolina School of Law. He is a
member of the Wayne County Bar Association; the NC Bar Association
(formerly serving on the Pro Bono Planning Committee); the NC
Academy of Trial Lawyers and the American Association for Justice.
Barfield is also a founding director of LANC and past president of
Legal Services of North Carolina. He is an active
participant in the Volunteer Lawyer Program on behalf of LANC and
has also served as pro bono counsel for a number of nonprofit
community organizations, including the
Greater Wayne Children’s Health Foundation, the
Wayne Opportunity Center and
Smart Choices for Youth. In 2003, Barfield received the
NC Bar Association’s William L. Thorp Pro Bono Award for
exceptional pro bono legal assistance to low-income citizens in
North Carolina.
Barfield succeeds Reid C. “Cal” Adams of Winston-Salem, who was the
first to serve a two-year term as chair of LANC since its inception
following the consolidation of LSC-funded legal services programs in
North Carolina in July 2002.
“I am excited to begin my term as Chair on the fifth anniversary of
the founding of Legal Aid of North Carolina,” said Barfield.
“In those five years, LANC has matured into an efficient and
successful statewide law firm. Its staff attorneys work to
give the poor in this state a fighting chance at justice, in the
most basic and important matters facing them, such as obtaining fair
housing, fair credit and fair access to economic opportunity.
LANC also coordinates the work of the many private attorneys who
volunteer their time to represent poor people across North Carolina.
“But our resources are limited. Currently we can serve only one out
of every eight North Carolinians who are financially eligible for
our services. During the next two years, my primary goal will
be to increase both direct funding and the participation of private
attorneys, as LANC strives to accomplish its mission of giving
low-income people equal access to justice.”
Other officers elected and serving two-year terms included: Lisa
Morgan (attorney with North Carolina Central University School of
Law, Durham, NC) as vice chair; and Burton Craige (attorney with
Patterson Harkavy & Lawrence, LLP, Raleigh, NC) as treasurer; and
Phillip Leigh (client representative, High Point NC) as secretary.
Legal Aid of North Carolina
(LANC) is a statewide, nonprofit law
firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to eligible,
low-income people in all 100 counties in North Carolina through 24,
geographically located offices in North Carolina. LANC’s
clients typically have an annual income of 125% or less of the
federally established poverty levels.
