Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC supports Legal Aid of NC with
lead corporate gift
August 18, 2008 MEDIA RELEASE
(Raleigh,
NC) -
Legal Aid of
North Carolina
announced today that it has received a pledge of $30,000 from
Blue
Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC).
The BCBSNC gift is one of the largest, single-year gifts that Legal
Aid of NC has received in its
Access to Justice Campaign, which is starting its second
year this month. The fundraising campaign secured
more than $500,000 in pledges and donations from lawyers in the
Triangle Area in the first year of the campaign.
The gift from BCBSNC is the first major corporate gift to the
campaign. Pursuing corporate support represents
an important new element in Legal Aid of NC’s overall approach to
philanthropy.
A.P. Carlton, Jr., who is with the
Allen and Pinnix law firm in Raleigh and is a Past President of
the American Bar Association, is the chairperson of the Legal Aid of
NC campaign. He noted that although Legal Aid of
NC serves the economically most vulnerable households, it defies the
stereotypical welfare program.
“The vast majority—comprising 35% of the state’s
population—of Legal Aid’s clients,” Carlton emphasized, “are
employed and hardworking, corporate customers as well as corporate
employees.”
Carlton
explained that after BCBSNC had all the facts, they quickly
understood the importance of Legal Aid of NC’s work and viewed their
gift as part of their corporate responsibility to the community as
well as a good investment.
“We’re extremely pleased,” Carlton
added, “that a company of the stature of Blue Cross Blue Shield has
taken a leadership role in support of this important campaign.”
