Free tax preparation at “Super Saturday” event in
Winston-Salem
March 1
February 26, 2008 Media Release
(Winston-Salem,
NC) –
Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) will provide free tax preparation
at a “Super Saturday” event on March 1st at its office at
102 West Third Street
in downtown Winston-Salem.
Trained tax preparers will prepare income tax returns and file them
electronically. To qualify for this free service, a family has to
have made under $40,000 and to call the
LANC-Winston-Salem Office, 336-725-9162, for an
appointment. All services are free.
The service is sponsored by LANC with the IRS providing oversight
under its
VITA (“Volunteer Income Tax Assistance”) Program.
Trained volunteers will be able to help with special credits,
such as Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC),
which is refundable federal income tax credit for low-income working
individuals and families.
“Many taxpayers don’t know that they must file a tax return to get
the tax rebate check” says Samantha Davis, coordinator of the Legal
Aid VITA site in Winston-Salem.
“Even people who usually don’t have to file taxes may be eligible
for a rebate check but they have to file,”
Such tax rebates have given some taxpayers another reason to beat
the April 15th deadline.
Davis also noted that the US
Commerce Department recently reported that the savings rate fell
into negative territory at minus 0.5 percent. This means that
Americans not only spent all of their after-tax income last year,
but had to dip into previous savings or increase borrowing.
“We save taxpayers hundreds of dollars in fees to help them keep
more money to use at home,” says
Davis. “We also provide
information on asset building to help families plan for a better
future.”
In addition to free tax return preparation assistance, LANC
will also offer free electronic filing (e-filing). Individuals
taking advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in
half the time compared to returns filed on paper – even faster if
you have your refund deposited directly into your bank account.
To make an appointment for the Super Saturday, free tax preparation
event, call the
LANC-Winston-Salem Office, 336-725-9162.
