Legal Aid to provide “free” CLE program for attorneys on October 29 in Hillsborough

(Pittsboro, NC) – In recognition of the National Pro Bono Celebration Week, Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) and Disability Rights NC (DRNC) will offer “free” legal training for its volunteer attorneys on October 29, 10:30 AM-2:00 PM at the Orange County Courthouse in Hillsborough, NC.

Attendees will receive three hours of continuing legal education (CLE) credits (pending approval from The NC State Bar), including one hour ethics credit.

“This event is being offered free to attorneys have done pro bono work for Legal Aid clients during the past 12 months,” said Kari Hamel, managing attorney of the LANC-Pittsboro Office.  "For those attorneys who have not volunteered recently, they can agree to take one or two pro bono telephone consultation during the next four months.

“We also encourage any attorney who cannot attend the CLE program to still consider volunteering in the spirit of National Pro Bono Celebration Week,” Hamel added.

Three CLE sessions will be offered:
4 Special Needs Trust Tools for Practitioners, which discusses using, drafting, funding, administering trust distributions, including avoiding the jeopardizing of government benefits such as SSI and Medicaid. This session will be lead by Anthony D. Nicholson and Timothy A. Nordgren, who are partners with the law firm of McPherson, Rocamora, Nicholson & Nordgren, PLLC, of Durham, NC.
4 The Lesser Known Advance Directive in NC, which addresses what you should know about the advance instruction for mental health treatment (statutory requirements, limitations and form). This session will be lead by Kari L. Hamel, managing attorney of the LANC-Pittsboro Office.
4 Clients with Disabilities: Ethical Considerations, which will be presented by Adrienne E. Allison, lead attorney for Disability Rights North Carolina of Durham, NC.

Lunch and refreshments will also be included in partnership with the Orange County Department on Aging.

National Pro Bono Celebration Week is scheduled for October 24 through 30, 2010 and is sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service. The celebration is a coordinated national effort to showcase the great difference that pro bono lawyers make to the nation, its system of justice, its communities and, most of all, to the clients they serve. The week is also dedicated to the quest for more pro bono volunteers to meet the ever-growing legal needs of this country's most vulnerable citizens.

Disability Rights North Carolina (DRNC) is the North Carolina's federally mandated protection and advocacy (P&A) system for people with disabilities and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with offices in Raleigh and Asheville.
