(Wrightsville Beach, NC) - The North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys (NCAWA) presented the 2005 Gwyneth B. David Award to Robin L. Ames at its annual convention in Wrightsville Beach this weekend.

Ames was recognized for her domestic advocacy work on behalf of clients as well as her generosity and mentoring of new advocates. She is a VOCA attorney with Legal Aid of North Carolina in Ahoskie.

"Robin Ames has been instrumental in incorporating domestic violence advocacy work into the legal aid practice," said Charlotte-Anne Alexander, who nominated Ames for the award and is a managing attorney for Legal Aid of North Carolina.

Ames began her legal career in 1983 as an associate with Mraz & Boner in Charlotte. In 1987 she joined the staff of Legal Services of Southern Piedmont in Charlotte and left in 1992 to work at Pamlico Sound Legal Services in Greenville. Ames has a been a VOCA attorney with the Ahoskie office of Legal of NC since 1998. She is a 1983 cum laude graduate of the University of Dayton School of Law.

"As for her practice, Robin has always focused much of her indefatigable talents on clients in need of family law assistance," noted Alexander. "While domestic violence advocacy is an established part of legal aid practice now, it was not always so, and Robin helped blaze that trail in North Carolina. Robin remains a steadfast advocate of providing comprehensive family law representation, is incredibly knowledgeable and a tremendous client asset. Robin is among the most knowledgeable and capable attorneys regarding legal representation of domestic violence victims in the state. She is a fearless client advocate and a passionate champion of women's rights."

The NCAWA annually presents the public service awards in memory and honor of Gwyneth B. Davis for the promotion of the participation of women attorneys in the legal profession and the rights of women under the law. Davis was a past president and board member of NCAWA and a staff attorney with Legal Aid of Northwest North Carolina and who has been noted as dedicated to improving the lot of women in general and women attorneys.

The North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys is a nonprofit, statewide organization of more than 600 members across North Carolina. NCAWA was established in 1978 to: (1) increase the effective participation by women in the justice system, in public office and within the legal profession; (2) promote the rights of women under the law; and (3) promote the welfare of the women attorneys of North Carolina.
