A legal advocacy model for low-income kids alleged to be
delinquent or undisciplined and who have undiagnosed or
inadequately treated mental or behavioral health issues

    parents

What does ACS do?

Advocates in the expressed interest of kids statewide
Links the expertise of a variety of competent professionals in
    the best interest of kids
Secures needed health, education, placement and other
     social services

How is ACS different from existing resources?

ACS helps access community-based services when traditional
    social work fails.
ACS does not "defend" against charges or monitor compliance
    with probation.

Why do North Carolina counties need ACS?

To keep kids in school and in the community
To ensure realistic dispositions are ordered and completed
  To prevent future offenses

Who may refer kids to ACS?

  Judges
  Court counselors
  Defense attorneys
  Other professionals in the community

What types of cases are priorities for ACS?

Cases that involve mental health issues such as depression,
    anxiety and substance abuse
Cases that involve education issues such as reinstatement,
    special education and learning disabilities
Cases that involve family issues such as inadequate parenting
     and violence at home
Cases of clients who are financially eligible for free legal
     services

What do these cases have in common?

Research and common sense show that these types of problems
exacerbate and contribute to repeat instances of offending
    behavior.
Solving these problems decreases the likelihood the youth will
    encounter the justice system again.
