Background:
Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is seeking a part-time Staff Attorney
to work in its Centralized Intake Unit (CIU), which provides referrals
and thorough legal assistance and counseling over the telephone in civil
matters to low-income persons in North Carolina. The CIU utilizes staff
attorneys in four-hour shifts; the number of shifts are limited to a
maximum of three or four per week; and the scheduling is flexible. Legal
Aid of North Carolina is a statewide, nonprofit 501(c)(3) law firm that
provides free legal services in civil matters to those households whose
income generally falls below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines.
Responsibilities & Duties:
The Centralized Intake Unit Staff Attorney is responsible for direct
service to clients who call LANC for legal assistance. The CIU attorney
is expected to efficiently conduct intake interviews, analyze facts,
effectively advise callers over the phone, and, when appropriate, refer
callers to LANC field offices, to other local legal service programs,
or to other agencies or organizations for further services—all while
maintaining a friendly and helpful demeanor. The CIU attorney is expected
to follow LANC policies for case acceptance and existing protocols for
opening and closing files, and to keep accurate records of his or her
work. CIU attorneys are extensively trained and then required to be
knowledgeable in all substantive legal areas affecting LANC clients.
Qualifications:
Must be licensed to practice law in North Carolina or available to take
the July bar exam. A manifest commitment to public interest law is essential.
We are especially interested in applicants who can enjoy extensive client
contact and can efficiently, but patiently, explain the law in a friendly,
non-condescending manner.
Salary:
$20.00-$22.00 per hour. Malpractice insurance included. Relaxed office
atmosphere.
