Background:
Legal Aid of North Carolina’s Battered
Immigrant Project is seeking a paralegal to coordinate state-wide
anti-trafficking efforts and to provide support in human trafficking
cases.
Legal
Aid of North Carolina
(LANC)
is a statewide, nonprofit (501-c-3) law firm
that provides free legal services in civil matters to those
households whose income falls below 125% of the federal poverty
guidelines. LANC's
Battered Immigrant Project is a statewide project that provides
assistance with immigration remedies for victims of domestic
violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.
Responsibilities & Duties:
The selected applicant will help to
expand and coordinate statewide services for human trafficking
victims. This position may involve serving as a point of contact
for other organizations, community organizing, and developing
protocols and referral systems for better serving human trafficking
victims across the state. The position may also include
interviewing and directly assisting potential victims of human
trafficking under the supervision of a licensed attorney. This
would include drafting affidavits, preparing immigration
applications and collecting supporting evidence. It may also
include helping victims access non-legal services such as housing,
public benefits or counseling, as well as general litigation support
(including filing court documents and interfacing with court and
administrative personnel). The position will include some travel to
meet with clients and attend meetings.
Qualifications:
Completion of at least two (2) years of
college or a two-year paralegal training program or related work
experience in a legal setting or community-based organization
required. Commitment to social justice and legal advocacy for the
poor preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
required. Experience working with immigrants and with survivors of
human trafficking, sexual assault or domestic violence preferred.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with people of
diverse levels of education and socio-economic backgrounds. Strong
preference for bilingual candidates.
Salary:
$27,000+ DOE. Excellent benefits and
leave package.
