Migrant farmworkers are essential to harvest North Carolina’s tobacco, fruits, vegetables and other plants.  Legal Aid of North Carolina's Farmworker Unit provides free legal assistance in civil matters to this population statewide.  Its office is centrally located in Raleigh, but staff make regular visits to rural areas where farmworkers live and work, mostly in the evenings.  The Unit’s litigation primarily involves employment law, utilizing state and federal laws regulating wages, working conditions, safety and housing for migrant farmworkers.  The Unit includes four attorneys, a community education coordinator, three paralegals and an administrative assistant.  Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is committed to high quality representation of farmworker clients and offers an opportunity to do challenging work with committed colleagues.  LANC is a statewide, nonprofit [501(c)3)] law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to those households whose income falls below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines.

Responsibilities & Duties:

Provide litigation support for cases for farmworker clients, as a part of a team with attorneys and paralegals.  Paralegals work independently to gather and synthesize documentary and testamentary proof for cases.  Paralegals also are responsible for maintaining the office case management system, and, under attorney supervision, interviewing clients.  The paralegal will also lead an outreach team or conduct client education sessions.  Limited evening or weekend work is required.

Qualifications:

Excellent analytical and organizational skills; good writing skills; excellent computer skills, especially with Microsoft Access, Excel and Word; proven ability to learn quickly and relate well to people who are low-income or of different nationalities and cultures; fluency in written and oral English and Spanish.  Experience with farmworkers and as a paralegal in the area of employment law is preferred.
