Background:

Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is seeking a staff attorney to work in its Sylva Office, which provides free legal assistance in civil matters to low-income persons in Haywood, Jackson, Swain, Graham, Macon, Cherokee and Clay Counties, North Carolina, including the Cherokee Indian Reservation.  LANC is a statewide, nonprofit [501(c)3] law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to those households whose income falls below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines.

Responsibilities & Duties:

Providing legal representation and advice to low-income clients; representing eligible clients in a variety of legal matters, including representation of domestic violence victims, home mortgage foreclosures, other consumer matters, public benefits, and housing issues; providing outreach and legal education; and other responsibilities that may be assigned.

Qualifications:

North Carolina Bar license.  The ability to communicate effectively with government officials, adversaries and clients; a commitment to assist low-income people; and other skills sufficient to perform the responsibilities of the job.  Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience working with low-income people.

Salary:

$40,100+ DOE. Excellent benefits and leave package.
