How does TAP-RC Work?

  •
    1.  Bring your picture identification, your Social Security number, and your W-2s and 1099s to the TAP-RC site near you.
  • 2.  A volunteer will check your papers and make sure that you are eligible for free tax preparation.
  • 3.  You will be asked to sign a form that gives TAP-RC permission to scan your papers to the central preparation office.  The volunteer at the TAP-RC site will send your papers through secure servers to the central preparation site.
  • 4.  IRS-certified tax preparers will prepare your tax return.  If possible, you will be connected with the tax preparer by video so that you can work with them to prepare your tax return.  If video is not available at your location, the tax preparer will speak with you by phone.
  • 5.  Your tax return will be completed and sent back to your location for your signature.  You will be asked to review the return and sign a Form 8879 which gives TAP-RC permission to e-file your federal and state returns.
  • 6.  If you choose to get your refund by direct deposit, most refunds are back within 7 to 10 days from the date the returns are e-filed.
