Legal Aid of North Carolina receives grants from Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation
(Raleigh, NC) – The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation has awarded grants
totaling $85,000 to Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) in support of
two statewide, legal services projects.
The Foundation designated $60,000 to LANC’s Battered Immigrant Project (BIP)
to provide free legal assistance and collaborative, community training on issues
for battered immigrant women in North Carolina. BIP is
coordinated through LANC’s
Domestic
Violence Initiative, which provides legal assistance to battered women
and/or domestic violence victims and strives to strengthen the working
relationships between legal aid and domestic violence programs throughout the
state.
In addition, the Foundation designated $25,000 to LANC’s
Environmental Poverty Law Project, which provides free legal assistance and
representation to low-income residents of North Carolina on environmental
issues. The project also provides the environmental resources
available to low-income communities and individuals and their advocates to
facilitate awareness of problems that affect the health of the low-income
community, which is the state’s most affected and under-served group.
“The continued financial support of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation has been
critical to these two, vital, legal services projects,” says George R. Hausen,
Jr., LANC’s executive director.
“We and our clients are, indeed, greatly appreciative of the
Foundation’s commitment to improve the quality of life of the people of North
Carolina.”
Since its establishment, the
Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation
has made grants of approximately $350 million to projects in all 100 North
Carolina counties.
Most recently, it has given special attention to five focus areas –
community-building and economic development; the environment; governance, public
policy and civic engagement; pre-collegiate education; and social justice and
equity. The Foundation is headquartered in Winston-Salem.
