Legal Aid of NC and UNC School of Law to offer free will and tax clinics in Halifax County on March 8
March 1, 2011 Media Release, LANC-Ahoskie Office

(Ahoskie, NC) – Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) and the UNC School of Law are teaming up to offer free will and tax clinics on Tuesday, March 8 at the Scotland Neck Town Hall in Scotland Neck and at the Halifax Community College in Weldon.

The clinics will provide assistance with execution of wills, powers of attorney, health care powers of attorney, living wills and federal and state tax returns.

“These legal documents are critical tools that will help you preserve your property for future generations, protect and build your family’s wealth and let others know of your wishes related to end-of-life care,” says Reynauld Williams, senior managing attorney of the LANC-Ahoskie Office.  “Our free clinic will give clients the opportunity to complete all legal requirements related to their documents during their appointments.”

These advance directive documents will be drafted by law students and reviewed by licensed attorneys.  Eligible clients will have the opportunity to complete all legal requirements (including signing, witnessing and notarizing) during their appointments.  While the documents are being drafted, clients will also have the opportunity to have their federal and state income tax returns completed and filed.

The law students will be working with and under the supervision of attorneys from Legal Aid of North Carolina, the UNC Pro Bono Program and the UNC Center for Civil Rights.  Interviews will take place on Tuesday March 8 at the Scotland Neck Town Hall (1013 Main Street in Scotland Neck) and at Halifax Community College (200 College Drive in Weldon).

These legal services will be provided free-of-charge, but individuals must meet the client eligibility requirements for Legal Aid of North Carolina.

To determine if you are eligible for this program and to schedule an appointment, contact Legal Aid of North Carolina’s Ahoskie Office at 1-800-682-0010 (toll-free).
