Lewis Pitts receives W.W. Finlator Award

(Raleigh) - The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Wake
County named Lewis Pitts as the 2005 recipient of the
W.W. Finlator Award at its annual awards dinner in Raleigh on
November 10.
Pitts is the senior managing attorney for
Advocates for Children's Services, a statewide project of
Legal Aid of North Carolina.
"Pitts has more than 25 years experience as a public interest
lawyer and is nationally recognized as an expert on children's
rights," noted the awards program. "Mr. Pitts defended
Brett Bursey on charges stemming from his arrest at a
rally for President Bush, was part of the legal team in the
Karen Silkwood case, and won a wrongful death judgment against
Greensboro authorities after the 1979 Ku Klux Klan killings."
The award is named in honor of W.W. "Bill" Finlator, who was a
leader for civil rights and social justice in Raleigh and North
Carolina for more than 40 years.
The awards ceremony also included keynote remarks from Brett
Bursey, director of the South Carolina Progressive Network, and
recognition of Equality NC.
The Wake County Chapter of the ACLU is a nonprofit organization
whose mission is: to improve the quality of life for all North
Carolinians; to secure, protect and defend the freedoms and
civil liberties of all North Carolinians through litigation,
legislation and public education; and to educate the people of
North Carolina about their legal and civil rights, and freedoms
through empowerment and outreach and open forums.
