November 10, 2005

(Raleigh) - The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Wake County named Lewis Pitts as the 2005 recipient of the W.W. Finlator Award at its annual awards dinner in Raleigh on November 10.

Pitts is the senior managing attorney for Advocates for Children's Services, a statewide project of Legal Aid of North Carolina.

"Pitts has more than 25 years experience as a public interest lawyer and is nationally recognized as an expert on children's rights," noted the awards program.  "Mr. Pitts defended Brett Bursey on charges stemming from  his arrest at a rally for President Bush, was part of the legal team in the Karen Silkwood case, and won a wrongful death judgment against Greensboro authorities after the 1979 Ku Klux Klan killings."

The award is named in honor of W.W. "Bill" Finlator, who was a leader for civil rights and social justice in Raleigh and North Carolina for more than 40 years.

The awards ceremony also included keynote remarks from Brett Bursey, director of the South Carolina Progressive Network, and recognition of Equality NC.
