Call 1-800-662-7407, weekdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., for free legal help related to Hurricane Matthew. Survivors who qualify for assistance will be matched with North Carolina lawyers who have volunteered to provide free, limited legal help.

Get help with:

  • FEMA benefits appeals

  • Insurance claims

  • Home repair contracts and contractors

  • Lost wills and other legal documents

  • Foreclosure and landlord-tenant problems

Callers should:

  1. Identify that they are seeking Hurricane Matthew-related legal assistance

  2. Ask for Disaster Legal Services

  3. Identify the county in which they are located.

Limitations on disaster legal services include fee-producing cases (i.e., those cases where fees are paid as part of the settlement by the court). Such cases are referred to a lawyer referral service.

This service is a partnership of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the North Carolina Bar Association and Legal Aid of North Carolina.

To learn more, read the press release announcing the hotline on the North Carolina Bar Association's website.
