Legal Aid of North Carolina is seeking an attorney to work out of its office located in Sylva. The Sylva office covers the 30th Judicial District, which comprises the seven most southwest counties in North Carolina. The office's service area also includes the Cherokee Indian Reservation, which has its own court system that has some similarities of law and procedure to the N.C. state courts, and, a significant number of differences as well.
The program has a main office in Sylva and a satellite office in Hayesville. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park entrance is a 30 minute ride from Sylva and a few minutes from Cherokee. There are many opportunities for someone who enjoys the outdoors.
The attorney we are seeking will have a practice which is primarily family law oriented both within Cherokee and the state courts. This is an opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing an Indian law practice and also has an interest in family law matters. The program currently has two attorneys each with 40 years experience in Federal Indian Law so there will be sufficient guidance and training available. The program also has three additional attorneys who practice on a regular basis in the Cherokee and state court systems. We are an office that has its attorney staff in court most days of the week, primarily handling domestic violence matters, landlord-tenant issues, and other LANC priority matters.
If you are interested in becoming part of a well-established program located in a beautiful area of North Carolina, please send your résumé, cover letter, and the names and contact information of three references to Larry Nestler at firstname.lastname@example.org and/or Suzanne Saucier at email@example.com.
