Legal Aid of North Carolina is seeking a full-time staff attorney to work in its Wilson office, which provides free legal assistance in civil matters to low-income people in Wilson, Nash, Edgecombe, Wayne, Lenoir and Greene counties. This position offers a great opportunity for a lawyer interested in developing trial and community economic development law skills in a supportive environment. Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide, 501(c)(3) nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income North Carolinians.
Responsibilities & Duties
The attorney's primary duties include providing legal advice and representation to low-income clients in civil matters including mortgage foreclosure, family law, domestic violence, employment, housing, consumer, public benefits, wills and advance directives, and other areas. The staff attorney will also learn skills in community lawyering, which includes representing non-profit organizations and grassroots organizations/groups, and conducting community outreach and legal education in our service area. Other duties as assigned.
North Carolina State Bar license. The ability to communicate effectively with clients from different backgrounds, government officials, community partners and adversaries. A commitment to assisting low-income people. Other skills sufficient to perform the responsibilities of the job. Spanish-speaking ability is preferred. Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience working with low-income people or practicing civil law.
$42,100+, depending on experience. Excellent benefits package.
