How to Represent a Child in a Contested Custody CaseThursday, January 30, 20202:00 PM – 6:00 PM 3.5 hours general CLE credit (pending approval by the State Bar)
Register by e-mailing Leslie at LeslieD@legalaidnc.org by January 28, 2020.
This year's CLE will focus on how to represent a child in a contested custody action in Wake County. We will have sessions (some recorded, some live) by experienced TCA attorneys on the role of a child's attorney, determining the child's position, negotiating a settlement, developing your case for trial and advocating in court as the child's attorney. In addition to our nuts-and-bolts sessions, we are very excited to announce two panel discussions. The first panel features three child therapists with expertise in trauma-focused treatment: Diana Meisburger, Ph.D., Cindy Frye, LCSW, and Latisha Riley, LPC. They will discuss how to best protect the child's therapeutic relationship in the context of ongoing litigation, when reunification therapy is not appropriate, and ways to give your client a voice. The second panel, the very popular "View from the Bench," will include three Wake County family court judges: the Honorable Christine Walczyk, Anna Worley, and Brian Ratledge. In addition to training attorneys to represent a child on a pro bono basis, this training will be especially helpful for all family law attorneys who are considering asking for a child's attorney to be appointed in a case.
$50 registration fee* includes:•3.5 CLE credit hours•Hors d'oeuvres •Course materials
* Discounts available for attorneys who have taken a pro bono case for The Child's Advocate.
