Legal Aid of NC distributing domestic violence outreach
posters to community
October 30, 2008 MEDIA RELEASE
(Raleigh, NC) – During Domestic Violence Awareness Month,
Legal Aid of
NC (LANC) is again distributing outreach posters to community
agencies and shelters throughout North Carolina.
The
poster is a print of an original illustration by artist
Liz Amini-Holmes of San Francisco along with
the tagline “Domestic Violence Abuses Everyone. We can help.
Call us.”
The poster also includes tear-off notes with toll-free
telephone numbers through which callers can request assistance.
“We decided to distribute the posters again this year because of
increased inquiries received from victims after last year’s
campaign,” said TeAndra Miller, a LANC attorney and project
director for LANC’s
Domestic Violence Prevention Initiative (DVPI). “We will
also make them available to community organizations all year long
because we feel that domestic violence prevention should be a
priority all twelve months of the year.”
During a showing of the poster at the
311
West Martin Galleries & Studios in Raleigh, Miller explained that domestic
violence occurs in all neighborhoods and impacts practically
everyone. She noted that domestic violence happens to people
of all ages, races, ethnicities and religions.
“Domestic violence is a problem that affects practically everyone in
our communities –in the poorest ghettos, in the fanciest mansions
and in white-picket-fence neighborhoods,” noted Miller. “At
local shelters, these victims can find help for themselves and their
children. And our attorneys at Legal Aid can assist them with
obtaining the legal means for protection.”
In 2007, LANC’s DVPI project handled more than 4,000 cases involving
domestic violence, most involving help with obtaining protective
orders for victims of domestic violence. Already in 2008, the
DVPI has handled as many cases involving spousal abuse.
“Victims of domestic violence will not permanently leave an abusive
situation unless they know their children will be safe and well
taken care of,” notes George Hausen, LANC’s executive director.
“Victims have greatly diminished chances of getting the statutorily
available ancillary relief (such as temporary custody, visitation
and child support) in a 50(b) hearing without a lawyer at their
side. Our attorneys at Legal Aid can help.”
LANC’s
Domestic Violence Prevention Initiative (DVPI) is a statewide
project unit that provides legal assistance to victims of domestic
violence regardless of income levels. The DVPI is comprised of
attorneys/advocates based in LANC field offices that are
geographically located across the
North Carolina. These DVPI
attorneys/advocates are trained in the laws available to help
increase the safety and self-sufficiency of victims, as well as the
dynamics of domestic violence and safety planning.
