Legal Aid of NC and UNC School of Law to offer free advance
directives clinics in Boone, West Jefferson and North Wilkesboro,
March 8-11
February 15, 2010 MEDIA RELEASE,
LANC-New Bern Office
(Boone, NC) –
Legal Aid of
North Carolina (LANC) and the
UNC School of Law
are teaming up to offer free advance directive and wills preparation
clinics during the week of March 8-11.
Advance directives are legal documents that allow a person to convey
his or her decisions about distribution of property and end-of-life
care ahead of time, such as wills, powers of attorney, healthcare
powers of attorney and living wills.
“These legal documents are critical tools that will help you
preserve your property for future generations and will let others
know of your wishes related to end-of-life and emergency medical
care,” says Denise Lockett, managing attorney of the
LANC-Boone Office. “Our clinic will give clients the
opportunity to complete any or all of these important legal
documents in one day, at no cost to them, during convenient,
scheduled appointments.”
The advance directive documents will be drafted by law students and
reviewed by licensed attorneys. Eligible clients will have the
opportunity to complete all legal requirements (including signing,
witnessing and notarizing) during their appointments. The law
students will be working with and under the supervision of attorneys
from
Legal Aid of North Carolina, the
UNC Pro Bono Program and the
UNC Center for Civil Rights.
In Boone, appointments will take place from 2 to 7
p.m. on Monday, March 8th at the
St. Luke's
Episcopal Church located at 170 Council Street, behind the Earth Fare.
In West Jefferson, appointments will take place
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10th at
the Ashe Services for Aging
located at 180 Chatty Rob Lane.
The Wilkes County appointments will take place from
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 11th at the
Wilkes Senior Center and Respite Care of Wilkes County
located at 228 Fairplains School Road, North Wilkesboro.
These legal services will be provided free of charge, but
individuals must meet the eligibility requirements for Legal Aid of
North Carolina. To determine if you are eligible for this program
and to schedule an appointment, contact the LANC-Boone
Office at 828-264-5640 or 800-849-5666.
