Young lawyers making an impact in support of Legal Aid of
North Carolina

– Young lawyers in the Triad banded together this summer to
encourage their peers to actively support Legal Aid of North
Carolina. Their efforts during the first “Triad Associates’
Drive” effectively increased donor participation statewide by ten
percent.
The Triad Associates Drive was conducted July 15 through August 31,
adding 45 new donors this summer for Legal Aid of North Carolina in
the Triad Area.
"This
campaign was about fostering a culture of giving to legal services
organizations by the younger generation of attorneys,” said
Steve M. Russell, Jr., an associate attorney
with Smith
Moore Leatherwood, LLP in Greensboro and chair of the Triad Associates
Drive. “Our focus was on donors, not dollars. While we greatly
appreciate every dollar received this year, a lifetime of giving
from new donors will mean much more to the community.”
Legal Aid of
North Carolina (LANC) is a nonprofit law firm that
provides legal services in civil (non-criminal) matters to low
income people. Attorneys in private practice traditionally
have supported legal aid through financial donations and pro bono
services.
“LANC is our legal counterpart, serving
low-income clients in our area,” noted Russell. “Their work
makes our Triad communities better places to live and work."
Seven law firms in the Triad Area participated in this first annual
Triad Associates Drive, including:

Humphrey & Leonard, LLP (Greensboro);

PLLC (Greensboro, 100 % participation);

(Winston-Salem);
Smith Moore Leatherwood, LLP (Greensboro);
Tuggle
Duggin & Meschan, PA (Greensboro, 100 % participation); and
Womble,
Carlyle, Sandridge & Rice, PLLC (Winston-Salem and Greensboro).
"We were proud of our associates’ support of Legal Aid's efforts to
provide competent and prepared counsel for the less fortunate
members of our communities who qualify for its services,” noted
Cal
Adams, a partner with
Womble Carlyle in
Winston-Salem. “Every attorney and
every client benefits from competent and well-prepared counsel
engaging in the adversarial process on behalf of opposing parties."
LANC plans to expand the
Associates Drive in 2011 in the Triad and
to other areas of North Carolina.
“The lawyers in the Triad have provided a model for collectively
involving the legal community in support of Legal Aid,” said Janeen
Gingrich, LANC’s development director. “This type of peer to
peer encouragement provides a strong base for all lawyers to support
the concept of equal access for all.”
