The Nelson Mullins/Legal Aid of North Carolina Fellowship
is a two-year fellowship in Legal Aid of North Carolina's Advocates
for Children’s Services project. The Nelson Mullins Fellow is
expected to provide civil legal services to low-income children in a
selected geographical area and work to expand the project to other strategically
selected areas of the state.
The Nelson Mullins Fellow engages in traditional yet holistic
legal representation of the child, including client interviews, investigation,
research, participation in treatment team meetings, IEP meetings, negotiations,
witness preparation, administrative hearings and appeals. The Nelson
Mullins Fellow is also expected to educate and collaborate with existing
agencies and community groups who are stakeholders in the provision
of services to children, as well as to provide outreach and training
to parents and community groups.
The Nelson Mullins Fellow must be licensed to practice law in
North Carolina when the fellowship begins. Applicants will be expected
to have a demonstrated commitment to community service. Typically,
litigation experience preferred, and some fluency in Spanish a
plus.
Advocates for Children’s Services is a statewide project
of LANC that provides free legal representation to children at-risk
of delinquency because they have been denied Medicaid, Special Education,
speedy permanent placement and/or the opportunity for a sound basic
education. ACS currently has offices in Durham and Winston-Salem.
The first Nelson Mullins Fellowship was awarded in September 2005.
The fellowship is underwritten and supported through the generosity
of the multi-state law firm, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough
LLP, which maintains offices in a number of the fastest-growing and
most dynamic cities in the Southeast, including its North Carolina offices
in Charlotte, Raleigh and Winston-Salem.
