Gaston County Volunteer Lawyers Receive Annual Awards

Five volunteer lawyers in Gaston County were recognized for their outstanding pro bono contributions through their local Volunteer Lawyers Program at the bi-monthly bar meeting on Wednesday, April 28, 2012.

Ashley E. Lorance of Katzenstein and Lorance, Emily H. Leazer of Gray Layton Kersh, and Douglas P. Arthurs and Nancy E. Foltz of Arthurs and Foltz received  2011 VLP Distinguished Service Awards.

 

R. Dennis Lorance of Katzenstein and Lorance received the 2011 VLP Service Award.

 

Becki Lowder, Coordinator for the Volunteer Lawyers Program in the Legal Aid of North Carolina's Gastonia office, presented the awards. The awards are based upon the number of hours reported in closed cases for 2011. Hours reported for each award recipient were in the area of family law, with the exception of Leazer's contribution, which was in the area of tax law.

 

Lowder commended the Gaston Bar for their continuing commitment since 1987, when the current program was formed. The dollar contribution to the community of the bar's pro bono program work this year neared $127,000.

 



 

Lincoln County Volunteer Attorney Receives Pro Bono Award

Jennifer M. Hames is the recipient of the Volunteer Lawyers Program 2011 Service Award in Lincoln County. Ms. Hames is an associate at The Jonas Law Firm in Lincolnton.

 

Becki Lowder, Coordinator for the Volunteer Lawyers Program in the Legal Aid of North Carolina's Gastonia office, presented the award at the weekly bar meeting on Thursday, April 26.

 

A member of the Lincoln County Bar, Hames serves as the president of the Judicial District 27B bar. She provided family law service to pro bono clients referred to her from her local Volunteer Lawyers Program. Hames, a graduate of Campbell University School of Law, also serves on the Legal Aid Council in the Gastonia service area. She has worked with the Jonas firm since 2008.


 



Cleveland County Volunteer Lawyers Recognized

 

PhotoJeannette Reeves and Nichole Greene, attorneys who provide services to clients through the Volunteer Lawyers Program, were recognized for their outstanding  pro bono contributions at the Cleveland County Bar meeting on Tuesday, March 27, 2012.

Becki Lowder, Coordinator for the Volunteer Lawyers Program in the Legal Aid of North Carolina's Gastonia office, presented the awards.

 

Ms. Reeves was the recipient of the VLP's 2011 Distinguished Service Award, having provided in excess of 50 hours to clients whose cases closed in 2011. Reeves is an associate at Teddy, Meekins and Talbert, PLLC in Shelby.

 

Ms. Greene received the VLP's Service Award, logging 40+ hours to clients referred to her through Legal Aid. Greene is the founder of the Law Office of Nichole B. Greene, PLLC in Shelby.

 

Lowder praised the Cleveland Bar for their strong pro bono commitment and for their increase in overall participation in the VLP. The pro bono contribution in dollars in 2011 from this bar exceeded $45,000. The majority of cases handled by volunteers were in the areas of family law and unemployment benefits appeals.
