October 14, 2003 MEDIA RELEASE
RE: Hurricane Isabel Relief
(Wilmington, NC) - Legal Aid of North
Carolina, Inc.-Wilmington Office (LANC) would like to notify people
who experienced damages during Hurricane Isabel in Bladen,
Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, Onslow and Pender Counties
of the importance of registering for assistance to the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA toll free # 800-621-3362 or for
the hearing impaired 800-462-7585) within the next month as the
application deadline expires Sixty (60) days from the date of the
Hurricane hitting North Carolina. The federal government may cover
repair of storm-damaged homes, may cover some property losses and
may cover some business losses.
FEMA may also give individuals notice to apply to the Small Business
Administration for a Disaster Loan. If you received damages
personally or as a business, regardless of income, it is strongly
recommended that you apply for any and all benefits by the
respective deadlines. Based on prior hurricane relief programs
requirements, failure to apply to FEMA and for a Small Business
Administration Loan may make you ineligible for any other relief
programs that may arise in the future.
If someone needs assistance in completing the forms or feel you are
inappropriately denied benefits, people in the above referenced
counties can call LANC at 1-800-672-9304, toll free, to make an
application for legal assistance between 9 AM and 1 PM and 2 PM to 4
PM, Monday thru Friday. Legal Aid is a non-profit public law firm
providing free civil legal assistance to eligible residents in
southeastern North Carolina.
Attached please find a copy of LANC’s "Disaster
Preparation and Aftermath Brochure," which may have useful
information for Hurricane Isabel survivors.
