Legal Aid of North Carolina calls for
volunteers in Winston-Salem
August 8, 2006 Media Release
(Winston-Salem, NC) –
Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) has
launched its “Justice For All”
volunteer project in Winston-Salem and volunteers of all types are
needed.
“We recognize that we have many people in our community who want to help
us,” said Hazel Mack-Hilliard, LANC’s senior managing attorney in
Winston-Salem. “Whether you are a former client, private legal
practitioner, student, mother/father, grandmother/father, or whatever,
you are invited to join us in our struggle to ensure justice for all.”
Mack-Hilliard noted that volunteers are needed to help with
multiple, ongoing projects and to educate the community about the
services we provide. Volunteer
candidates should be interested in public interests or law-related
matters. All volunteers will receive extensive orientation prior
to being given any assignments; increasing the public’s knowledge of
what LANC does and giving each volunteer a chance for a beneficial
experience.
Each volunteer may choose to do such things as: make
community education presentations to groups and organizations; organize
and set up for community education presentations; make calls for events;
file and copy documents; do much needed mailings; retrieve information
from the courthouse; travel to other counties or
observe the courtroom process.
Attorneys can volunteer to take cases as
pro bono attorneys.
College and law students may be interested in the courtroom
observation project to assist LANC in keeping its landlord/tenant clinic
useful.
“The concept of ‘Justice For All’ cannot, and will not, happen without
the commitment of people who demand for their brothers and sisters what
they demand for themselves,” stated Mack-Hilliard. “We are looking
for people who possess that spirit of brotherhood and want to
demonstrate a commitment through their actions to justice for all.
If you recognize that each time one single person is denied access to
justice, it is a blow to ALL of our rights to justice, then join us”
