October 21, 2009 Media Release

(Pittsboro, NC) – In recognition of the National Pro Bono Celebration Week and the Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Pittsboro Office of Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) will offer “free” legal training for its volunteer attorneys on October 29, 9:45 AM-12:15 PM at the Wicker Convention Center in Sanford, NC.

Attendees will receive two hours of continuing legal education (CLE) credits (pending approval from The NC State Bar), including one hour of substance abuse/mental illness CLE credit.

“This event is being offered ‘free’ to attorneys who practice in Alamance, Chatham, Lee, Moore, Orange and Richmond Counties,” said Kari Hamel, managing attorney of the LANC-Pittsboro Office, “and who have taken at least one case pro bono during the past 12 months or agree to take one or two pro bono telephone consultation during the next six months outside of their judicial district.”

“We also encourage any attorney who cannot attend the CLE program to still consider volunteering in the spirit of National Pro Bono Celebration Week,” Hamel added.

Two CLE sessions will be offered:
Debt Collection Defense When the Plaintiff is Allegedly a 3rd-Party Purchaser, which includes discussion of statutory requirements, legislative developments and recovery of attorney fees.  This session will provide one hour of general CLE credit and will be lead by Andrea B. Young, who is a staff attorney from the Financial Protection Law Center in Wilmington, NC and Charlotte, NC.
Mental Illness and Substance Abuse: Protecting Your Law Practice - A Primer on Identifying and Coping for Lawyers.  This session will provide one hour of substance abuse/mental illness CLE credit and will be lead by Katrina N. Kuzyszyn-Jones, Psy.D., Licensed Psychologist in Durham, NC.

Registration for the event can be made by calling the LANC-Pittsboro Office toll-free at 1-800-672-5834, or by going to the LANC-Pittsboro Office Internet website, http://www.legalaidnc.org/pittsboro .

National Pro Bono Celebration Week is scheduled for October 25 through 31, 2009 and is sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service.  The celebration is a coordinated national effort to showcase the great difference that pro bono lawyers make to the nation, its system of justice, its communities and, most of all, to the clients they serve.  The week is also dedicated to the quest for more pro bono volunteers to meet the ever-growing legal needs of this country's most vulnerable citizens.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month was first observed in October 1987, the same year the first national toll-free hotline was begun.  The intent was to connect battered women’s advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children.  In 1989 the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative Legislation was passed by the U.S. Congress. Such legislation has passed every year since with National Coalition Against Domestic Violence providing key leadership in this effort.
