National Pro Bono Celebration Week is scheduled for October 25
through 31, 2009 and is sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on
Pro Bono and Public Service. The celebration is a coordinated
national effort to showcase the great difference that pro bono
lawyers make to the nation, its system of justice, its communities
and, most of all, to the clients they serve. The week is also
dedicated to the quest for more pro bono volunteers to meet the
ever-growing legal needs of this country's most vulnerable citizens.
Domestic Violence
Awareness Month was first observed in October 1987, the same
year the first national toll-free hotline was begun. The
intent was to connect battered women’s advocates across the nation
who were working to end violence against women and their children.
In 1989 the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month Commemorative
Legislation was passed by the U.S. Congress. Such legislation has
passed every year since with
National Coalition Against Domestic
Violence providing key leadership in this effort.
