Legal Aid celebrates 2008 pro bono efforts in Winston Salem

On Thursday, March 26, 2009, the Winston-Salem office of Legal Aid of North Carolina held its second annual pro bono celebration to recognize the pro bono efforts of our local attorneys.  The event and reception were held  in the Upper Level of the Liberty Plaza Building (building in which the LANC-Winston-Salem Office is located) in downtown Winston-Salem.
 

Dean Blake D. Morant of Wake Forest School of Law was
 the guest speaker and spoke on the need for active pro bono
  services by the private bar.

 

The LANC-Winston-Salem office recognized 54 pro bono attorneys who took a case in 2008.

...received the Volunteer Attorney of the Year Award from Yvette Stackhouse (Managing Attorney, LANC-Winston-Salem Office)
...Prendergast served as a volunteer attorney in the LANC-Winston-Salem Office, working on numerous cases, including mortgage foreclosure cases, during 2008.

 

 Susan Brotherton (Sole Practitioner, Statesville)
...received the award for Most Domestic Cases.  The
award was presented by Valene K. Franco (Managing Attorney - Domestic, LANC-Winston-Salem Office).
...Brotherton has taken DV cases pro bono for several years, helping low-income clients in Iredell County who most likely would not have received legal services without her dedicated pro bono assistance.
 

Jeff Acker (Sole Practitioner, Winston-Salem)
...received the award for Most Housing/Consumer Cases.  The award was presented by Liza Baron (Managing Attorney - Housing, Education, Employment, Consumer,  LANC-Winston-Salem Office).
...Acker took three bankruptcy cases and several consumer cases in 2008.
  

Kilpatrick Stockton , LLP. Winston-Salem Office
...received recognition as Firm of the Year for its strong commitment to pro bono work in 2008.  The award was presented by Alicia Edwards (Supervising Attorney, LANC-Winston-Salem Office).
...Steve Berlin and David Smith accepted the award on behalf of the K-S Office in Winston-Salem.  As signatory to the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, Kilpatrick Stockton commits to represent low-income individuals and the organizations which serve them.
