February 15, 2010 MEDIA RELEASE, LANC-New Bern Office

(New Bern, NC) – Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) and the UNC School of Law are teaming up to offer free advance directive legal services on Thursday, March 11 at the Pamlico County Senior Center in Alliance, NC

Advance directives
are legal documents that allow you to convey your decisions about distribution of property and end-of-life care ahead of time, such as wills, powers of attorney, healthcare powers of attorney and living wills.

“These legal documents are critical tools that will help you preserve your property for future generations, protect and build your family’s wealth and let others know of your wishes related to end-of-life care,” says David Caddigan, managing attorney of the LANC-New Bern Office.  “Our free clinic will give clients the opportunity to complete all legal requirements related to their documents during their appointments.”

The advance directive documents will be drafted by law students and reviewed by licensed attorneys.  Eligible clients will have the opportunity to complete all legal requirements (including signing, witnessing and notarizing) during their appointments.

The law students will be working with and under the supervision of attorneys from Legal Aid of North Carolina, the UNC Pro Bono Program and the UNC Center for Civil Rights.  Interviews will take place on Thursday, March 11 at the Pamlico County Senior Center located at 800 Main Street in Alliance.

These legal services will be provided free-of-charge, but individuals must meet the eligibility requirements for Legal Aid of North Carolina.

To determine if you are eligible for this program and to schedule an appointment, contact Legal Aid of North Carolina’s New Bern Office at 252-637-9502 or 800-672-8213.
