Cucumber p ickers fill deep 5/8 bushel buckets with all
sizes of cucumbers and are usually paid on a piece rate system rather than by the hour.
Workers
must
work
at
a
rapid
pace
to
earn
over
the
minimum
wage
when
earning
$0.65-$0.70
per
bucket.
Unless
there
is
a
bumper
crop
and
pickers
work
at
a
high
rate
of
speed,
reaching
under
thorny
leaves
and
stems
to
snap
off
the
pickle
cucumbers,
it
is
difficult
to
earn
the
minimum
wage.
The
Farm
Labor
Organizing
Committee,
or
FLOC, is an Ohio based farmworker union
won a collective bargaining agreement covering many of the workers who
pick pickle cucumbers for the Mt. Olive pickle Company in 2004.
