Farmwork in North Carolina
North Carolina is one of the biggest agricultural states east of the Mississippi River. It is the largest producer of tobacco, the second largest producer of sweet potatoes, the third largest producer of pickle cucumbers and in the top ten in long green cucumbers and apple production. All of these crops are hand harvested utilizing primarily the labor of migrant farmworkers. Farmworkers in North Carolina are racially and ethnically diverse, including African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Central Americans (including indigenous peoples).
