Background
Legal Aid of North Carolina’s
Battered Immigrant Project (LANC-BIP) is seeking a full-time
paralegal in its Charlotte office to work with immigrant victims
of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

(LANC) is a statewide, nonprofit 501(c)3 law firm that provides
free legal services in civil matters to low-income people in
order to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal
barriers to economic opportunity. LANC operates in all 100
counties in North
Carolina
through 24 geographically based offices. The
LANC-BIP is a specialized project within LANC to provide
linguistically and culturally appropriate services to immigrant
victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human
trafficking. The LANC-BIP provides
immigration assistance to clients throughout the entire state
and also assists immigrant clients with other issues related to
their abuse.
Responsibilities & Duties:
Interviewing and directly assisting
clients under the supervision of a licensed attorney; drafting
affidavits for clients and supporting witnesses; preparing
immigration applications; obtaining supporting evidence from law
enforcement and social services organizations; assisting victims
of human trafficking with non-immigration matters such as
procurement of housing and public benefits; and general
litigation support (including filing court documents and
interfacing with court and administrative personnel). The
paralegal will be expected to participate in community education
activities outside of the office.
Qualifications:
Completion of at least two (2) years of college or a two-year
paralegal training program or related work experience in a legal
setting or community-based organization required.
Commitment to social justice and legal advocacy for the poor
preferred. Excellent verbal and written communication
skills required. Fluency in Spanish is required.
Salary:
$25,000+ DOE. Excellent leave and health benefits.
