Background:

Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is seeking a full-time managing attorney to work in its Smithfield office.  LANC is a statewide, nonprofit (501-c-3) law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to those households whose income falls generally below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines.  The LANC-Smithfield Office provides services to an area comprising Harnett, Johnson, and Sampson Counties

Theoffice has an estimable 25-year history of providing high-quality legal advice, counsel, and representation to clients in Eastern North Carolina on both individual cases and community development projects.  The current advocacy staff is very talented but relatively new.  Mindful of the offices’ long traditions, the selected candidates will be responsible for continuing to provide high-quality legal work to clients by keeping the staffs well-motivated, trained, and integrated in the various practice groups and to maintain the excellent state of community and bar relations through participation and activism in community efforts.

Responsibilities & Duties:

Overall leadership of the office.  Supervise the legal and support team to ensure maximum access and the highest quality legal representation and outreach for clients and the community.  Work with local community and bar leaders to ensure optimum participation of those groups in the work of the program.  Maintain the competence, morale, and commitment to the mission of the staff.  Ensure that legal work and outreach conform to the rules of professional responsibility and comply with grant and funding requirements. Collaborate with and participate on the statewide and regional management teams to solve common problems.  

Qualifications:

North Carolina Bar license and 6, or more, years of relevant legal and supervisory experience.  The supervisory experience may be substituted by meaningful experience in community organizing or activism.  We are looking for a highly organized and zealous advocate with a record of commitment to community lawyering.  The ideal candidate will be sensitive to the needs of a racially diverse community and will be able to work effectively with local organizations, government agencies, and the public to provide meaningful access to justice, combat poverty, and create economic opportunity for our clients.  In short, a demonstrated and long-standing commitment to assisting low-income people and to social justice is essential.  High proficiency in Spanish is preferred, but not absolutely required.  

Salary:

$50,000+D.O.E.  Excellent benefits and leave package.
