Background:
Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is seeking a full-time
bilingual Community Educator and Paralegal to support its
Medical-Legal Partnership team in the
Durham service area. The Medical-Legal Partnership is a new
collaboration between LANC,
Duke
Medical
Center
and the Children’s Education Law Clinic of Duke Law School. The
project strives to enable health clinic clients to access special
needs programs, public benefits and general legal assistance in a
way that will improve children’s health outcomes and their general
economic opportunities.
Responsibilities & Duties:
The project paralegal will conduct intake with empathy and
provide enthusiastic legal and administrative support for the legal
advocacy team of the project and the
Durham
office, as needed. The paralegal—as a full partner in the team—will
also assist in the overall design of the project, including the
design of in-service training both for the legal as well as the
medical staff. After training, the paralegal may counsel and
represent clients in administrative matters under supervision of an
attorney, and perform other related responsibilities. The bounds of
responsibility will be determined by the selected candidate’s
abilities, judgment, and initiative.
Qualifications:
Must be a college graduate, an effective writer and an effective
communicator in meetings and training settings. Must be an effective
organizer and possess the judgment and ability to make decisions,
carry out project duties and accomplish project goals as a part of a
team without being micro-managed. Must be fluent in Spanish and
English. Must be an experienced and zealous organizer and advocate
with a demonstrated commitment to improving the conditions
confronting low-income families and children. The selected applicant
must possess a NC Driver’s License and reliable transportation as
travel through the seven county service area will be required.
Salary:
$27,000+D.O.E. Excellent benefits package.
