Background:
Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC)is seeking a full-time
staff attorney to work in its
Wilson Office, which provides free legal assistance in
civil matters to low-income clients in Edgecombe, Greene, Lenoir,
Nash, Wayne and Wilson
counties. The selected applicant will be trained and engaged
in our general practice of law, including housing, public benefits,
consumer, family, education and employment matters.
LANC is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) law firm that provides free legal
services in civil matters in all 100 counties of
North Carolina to those households whose
income primarily falls below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines.
Responsibilities & Duties:
The selected applicant will interview,
advise and represent low-income clients in civil matters, provide
outreach and community legal education in the LANC-Wilson Office’s
service area, and perform other related responsibilities that may be
assigned.
Qualifications:
Must be licensed to practice law in
North Carolina. For those not currently
licensed, an offer of employment will be contingent upon being
licensed, via July 2008 bar exam or comity in North Carolina. We
are looking for a highly organized, zealous advocate with a
demonstrated commitment to legal advocacy for low-income people or
public interest and a desire to work in a collaborative and
team-oriented environment. An appreciation for diversity is
essential. An eagerness to litigate issues helpful to our client
base is highly desirable. Entry level and experienced
applicants will be considered for this position. High proficiency
in Spanish is preferred. The selected applicant must possess a NC
Driver’s License and reliable transportation as travel through the
office’s service area will be required.
Salary:
$39,000.00 + D.O.E.; excellent benefits
and leave package.
