Fellowships
Opportunities to make a difference...
Legal Aid of North Carolina presently offers two fellowship programs:
Clifton W. Everett, Sr. Community Lawyer Fellowships
...offered annually since 1992 as entry level, one-year staff attorney
positions in selected offices. Everett Fellows are responsible for handling
a general caseload in the traditional areas of poverty law practice
and focus on eligible clients who live in rural areas. Typically, an
Everett Fellowship begins in September, after the graduating law student
has sat for the NC Bar exam and received his/her results. The Everett
Fellowship provides an excellent opportunity for a post-graduate to
gain litigation experience and provide valuable service to low-income,
rural communities.
The Judge Samuel J. Ervin, III Fellowship
...a one-year staff attorney position in the
LANC-Morganton Office, which provides free legal assistance in civil
matters to low-income persons in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba
and McDowell Counties of northwest North Carolina. The Ervin Fellow
is responsible for handling a general caseload in traditional areas
of poverty law practice, involving housing, employment, consumer, public
benefit and elder law issues.
Applications for Fellowships
Applicants for LANC Fellowships are expected to have a
demonstrated commitment to community service and be able to relate
well to low-income people. Applicants will be considered based
on their legal abilities and their demonstrated commitment to social
justice. Fellows must be ready to accept the challenging and
rewarding tasks of a full-fledged attorney who serves rural
communities. Previous experience as a LANC
Martin Luther King,
Jr. Summer Intern or an IOLTA-funded summer intern is a plus.
A limited number of applicants will be selected for in-person
interviews, that typically take place in the office for which the
position is available; however, preliminary interviews may take
place at remote locations (such as on campus or by telephone).
Applicants are encouraged to apply by October 16;
however, the positions are open until filled.
An applicant should send a cover letter [expressing interest
and preference(s)], your resume, a writing
sample (no more than 10 pages) and names/contact information
of three (3) references to:
