Background:
Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC)
is seeking applications for a
Martin Luther King, Jr. Summer (MLK) Internship
for Summer 2010. This MLK intern will be placed in LANC's
Battered
Immigrant Project (BIP) office in Raleigh.
The MLK Internship Program is an integral part of the LANC's dual goals to:
(1) reduce the inequities in our legal system by ensuring that poor
people, minorities and victims of domestic violence receive equal
justice; and (2) to initiate new lawyers to the lifelong commitment
of providing access to justice for all individuals regardless of
their ability to pay. The summer internship program is named in
honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and is funded in part by
contributions from the North Carolina Bar Association and Lawyers
Mutual Liability Insurance Company.
LANC is a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in
civil matters to those whose income falls below 125% of the federal
poverty guidelines. LANC operates in all 100 counties through 24
geographically based offices and also operates seven statewide
project units that focus on special areas of the law. Depending on
the casework demand at any particular time, the LANC offices and
statewide projects litigate cases in civil matters and practice
extensively in the state, federal and tribal courts.
Responsibilities & Duties:
The MLK Internship program places talented law students into the
real world of legal aid advocacy in order to work on actual cases. MLK interns experience client contact, courtroom participation and
legal research and writing on actual cases under the supervision of
seasoned legal aid attorneys. MLK
interns are challenged to put classroom training and talent to work
on behalf of the many needy individuals that LANC serves and to work
creatively to reduce the barriers to a more just society.
Qualifications
Current law student, preferably 2L. Applicants will be expected to
have a strong interest in poverty law and to be able to relate well
to low-income people. Fluency in Spanish is required.
Stipend
A stipend of $3,500 based on a 10-week summer internship.
