About North Carolina...

Background:

Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is seeking applications for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Summer (MLK) Internship for Summer 2010.  This MLK intern will be placed in LANC's Battered Immigrant Project (BIP) office in Raleigh.

The MLK Internship Program is an integral part of the LANC's dual goals to: (1) reduce the inequities in our legal system by ensuring that poor people, minorities and victims of domestic violence receive equal justice; and (2) to initiate new lawyers to the lifelong commitment of providing access to justice for all individuals regardless of their ability to pay.  The summer internship program is named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and is funded in part by contributions from the North Carolina Bar Association and Lawyers Mutual Liability Insurance Company.

LANC is a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to those whose income falls below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines.  LANC operates in all 100 counties through 24 geographically based offices and also operates seven statewide project units that focus on special areas of the law.  Depending on the casework demand at any particular time, the LANC offices and statewide projects litigate cases in civil matters and practice extensively in the state, federal and tribal courts.

Responsibilities & Duties:

The MLK Internship program places talented law students into the real world of legal aid advocacy in order to work on actual cases.  MLK interns experience client contact, courtroom participation and legal research and writing on actual cases under the supervision of seasoned legal aid attorneys.  MLK interns are challenged to put classroom training and talent to work on behalf of the many needy individuals that LANC serves and to work creatively to reduce the barriers to a more just society.

Qualifications

Current law student, preferably 2L.  Applicants will be expected to have a strong interest in poverty law and to be able to relate well to low-income people.  Fluency in Spanish is required.
