Background:
Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC)
is seeking part-time staff attorneys to work in its
Senior Law Project (SLP) hotline unit, which provides referrals
and thorough legal assistance and counseling over the telephone in
civil matters to senior citizens in North Carolina. The SLP
utilizes staff attorneys in four-hour shifts; the number of shifts
are limited to a maximum of three or four per week; and the
scheduling is flexible. LANC is a statewide, nonprofit
501(c)(3) law firm that provides free legal services in civil
matters to those households whose income generally falls below 125%
of the federal poverty guidelines.
Responsibilities & Duties:
The Senior Law Project Hotline staff attorney is responsible for
direct service to clients who call LANC for legal assistance.
The SLP attorney is expected to efficiently conduct intake
interviews, analyze facts, effectively advise callers over the
phone, and, when appropriate, refer callers to
LANC field offices, to other local legal service programs, or to
other agencies or organizations for further services -- all while
maintaining a friendly and helpful demeanor. The SLP attorney
is expected to follow LANC policies for case acceptance and existing
protocols for opening and closing files, and to keep accurate
records of his or her work. SLP attorneys are extensively
trained and then required to be knowledgeable in all substantive
legal areas affecting LANC clients.
Qualifications:
Must be licensed to practice law in North Carolina. A
manifest commitment to public interest law is essential. We
are especially interested in applicants who can enjoy extensive
client contact and can efficiently, but patiently, explain the law
in a friendly, non-condescending manner. Spanish or other
foreign language proficiency a definite plus.
Salary:
$20.00-$22.00 per hour. Malpractice insurance included.
Relaxed office atmosphere.
